The light installation is a part of the KEEPING SHADOWS project, made during the Akiyoshidai International Art Village - Artist in Residence Support Program 2016 in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
Fading
Shadows is a light path leads into the gallery, which visitors need to pass.
The installation vanishing the ‘proof of existence‘- as philosophy describe our
own shadow. Peoples lose their shadows in Haruki Murakami’s novel: Hard-Boiled
Wonderland and the End of the World* (1985).Without shadow, they also
losing their mind and forget the past. Sometimes they only have a half shadow,
and so they search for the other half. As a symbolic act, visitors enter or
leave the exhibition without shadow, and so they need to search for it.
「影が消えていくこと」はギャラリーの出入り口におかれた光の通り道である。鑑賞者はそこを通らなければならない。作品は、哲学的に「存在の証拠」とされる「影」を消す。村上春樹「世界の終りとハードボイルド·ワンダーランド」(1985)では、影を失くした人々が登場する。彼らは、影とともに過去の記憶も喪失している。影を半分だけ持つ者は、もう半分の影を
探している。象徴的な意味において、鑑賞者は展覧会空間に影を持たずに入り/去り、影を探すことを余儀なくされるのである。

My project during the Artist in Residency Program at AIAV focuses on shadows. In my work 'shadow’ symbolises the past, memory, tradition, and the culture itself. The inspiration of my research is Junichiro Tanizaki’s essay: In Praise of Shadows (1933) * which introduces the important of shadow in Japanese culture. Tanizaki explains how bright light vanishes the small, but significant details of tradition, and how the atmosphere therefore changes. The soft natural light of the shoji paper lamp for example, replaced by the strong electric light, and even the moon-viewing is disturbed by the light pollution. Several installations connected together in the exhibition space with this topic.
滞在中のプロジェクトは影に焦点をあてた。私の作品の中で「影」は、過去、記憶、伝統、また文化そのものを描写する。谷崎潤一郎「陰翳礼讃(1933)」に影響を受けている。谷崎は、日本の文化の中で、影がどれほど重要かということを言及している。また、小さな、しかしながらとても重要な伝統の一部が明るい光によって消され、その結果、いかに空間や雰囲気が変えられてしまうかということについても説明している。例えば、障子の柔らかいランプの光が、強い蛍光灯に変えられてしまったとき、お月見は光の妨害によって楽しめないものになるといえる。展覧会場では、このトピックにまつわるインスタレーションが展示された。
